31 jobs asthmatics should not take

Ideally you should be able to participate in any profession if your asthma is under control. Realistically, however, you'll want to avoid possible asthma triggers, such as dust, chemicals or smoke.

So, that in mind, each of the following jobs has the potential to expose you to asthma triggers, and you may wish to consider choosing another profession.
  1. Lumberjack (outdoor allergens, sawdust)
  2. Construction (dust)
  3. Building destruction/ demolition (dust)
  4. Roadwork (dust)
  5. Electrician (dust)
  6. Factory work/ manufacturing (fumes, dust, chemicals)
  7. Welding (fumes)
  8. Auto mechanic/ auto body repair (fumes, chemicals)
  9. Carpentry (wood dust, house dust)
  10. Farmer (outdoor and animal allergies)
  11. Winter athletics (cold air triggers asthma, and may even cause it)
  12. Cigarette tester (bad for lungs)
  13. Landscaping/ lawn care (outdoor allergens)
  14. Door to door salesperson (house pets, wood smoke, cigarette smoke, house dust, etc.)

  16. Janitor (dust)
  17. Housekeeping (house allergens)
  18. Mountain climber (decreased oxygen level)
  19. Bar tending/ waiter, waitress (if smoking is allowed)
  20. Baking (flour dust)
  21. Mining (obvious reasons)
  22. Firefighter (smoke, household allergens, chemicals)
  23. EMT or Paramedic (exposure to household allergens)

  29. Criminal justice (exposure to home allergens, smoke, outdoor elements, stress)
  30. Chemist (chemicals)
  31. Veterinarian (animal dander)
I know, I know, it's kind of frustrating.  I made this list at the recommendation of one of my teachers back in 1985, and it was very frustrating.  Yet I feel better once I finished my list of jobs you CAN do with asthma.  That list will be coming in my next post.
