Usually poeple choose the profession of RT because the one they are in now is too arduous, dangerous, and doesn't pay well. So they switch to this one. They appreciate the ups and downs of this profession because we work in air conditioning, work with wonderful people, are guaranteed a job, and can take the job anywhere. It's good, fair work -- if you want to work that is.
Many of them -- expecially those who worked in construction -- contend if you hate the profession of RT you should try working on a black top on a 100 degree day during a dust storm. Sure this profession isn't ideal, yet what job is. Work is work; work is pay. That's usually why people choose this profession.
Here's a list of some jobs of those I've had contact with:
- House wife
- House dad
- Construction worker
- Painter
- Journalist
- Hair dresser/ barber
- Food service
- Pilot
- Factory worker
- Nurse
- Salesperson
- Telephone/ cable company
- Manager of small business
- Military

I was an EMT-specialist with every intention of beginning paramedic class but after a horrible winter and sliding on ice in the ambulance,I decided to look for something else. I really miss EMS in the summer but have not regretted my decision.

I'll add another profession: Child care/teaching. Burned out and Decided I wanted to be something different when I 'Grew Up'
EMT
Still in my program, but being a Respiratory Therapist will be my first "career" job. Originally I majoring in education, but decided to change my major half way through. I have currently held jobs as cashiers, a direct care worker, and a Bank Teller.
Although in my classes there is a very large range of jobs people have previously held, and there is a larger percentage of adults in the program as opposed to students right out of high school.
